What is interesting about President Obama is that he seems to be unclear on the direction his administration is to take with regards to the issue of same-sex marriage. At the federal level the President does not support civil unions and equal rights for same-sex couples, however it appears that privately he supports these unions. I think that the President’s politics and personal beliefs are in conflict with one another. If there were no political ramifications for his actions I think that he would support (federally) same-sex unions but he also knows that by doing that he could lose a lot of support from voters who are in the middle and from Republicans who support him. I think that personally the president believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman but that he understands that people (all people) should have equal protection under the law and that gay and lesbian couples should have the right to marry just like anyone else. Nava and Dawidoff statements made were very valid and i think that Obama would agree with them stating on a federal level he can not let same sex unite as one but on a personal level i believe Obama would let the same sex marriages happen if he did not have to go against his congress or his personal religious beliefs.
