Both
the Mission Critical and the Causal Argument websites were extremely helpful.
The Mission Critical website discusses the basics of an argument. It tells you
how to analysis the arguments with the different types. It tells you about the
appeals and the fallacies. It explains the misdirected appeals and the
emotional appeals. One thing that stood out to me on this website was the
universal statement because the “all or none” idea. It is considered to be the
universal term. A lot of unqualified terms are meant to be universal terms, which
includes singular and plural nouns. The causal argument website discusses the
strengths of a casual argument. The strengths in a casual argument are how
acceptable the implied comparison is, how likely the case of for causation
seems to be, and the creditability. Complex casual arguments usually use
commonality and difference reasoning to show that the suggested cause is the
only significant difference.

Scientific Knowledge
I
have had several moments where I have drawn an incorrect conclusion but I always
find ways to find out the right answers. Recently one of my friends has been
taking a lot of photos with a girl and they have both been posting them on a
application called instagram. From the looks of it you would automatically
assume that they were an item now because they were cuddled up. The way that I
corrected my mistake was by asking him if they were together or friends, his
response was that they were only friends and not to get the wrong idea. I
texted him and asked him which is how I discovered my observation to be misleading.
There was not much scientific knowledge used in finding out the correct answer
I just decided to ask the source instead of assuming. Before I asked him about
it I did look into it more because I put two and two together but I was
incorrect and he did tell me the truth.

My Horoscope
A love
partner could contact you out of the blue, Sagittarius, perhaps proposing
that the two of you get together tonight - alone. You're in just the mood for
this, since you're feeling especially sexy and not particularly afraid to
show it. An evening at home or in a dark corner of your favorite restaurant
might be just the ticket. Don't be surprised if your friend orders champagne
and shows up with flowers! Have fun!
|
My horoscope is pretty
accurate. I did recently run into an old friend and we did hang out but it was
not on a romantic level. We are just really good friends that haven’t seen each
other in almost a year. The part about being sexy is not so much an accurate
statement I would consider that to be
falsifiable. the only accurate part of my horoscope is the first
sentence “A love partner could contact you out of the blue, Sagittarius,
perhaps proposing that the two of you get together tonight - alone.” He was an
old love partner but we figured out we were better off as friends. What makes
this horoscope falsifiable is the fact that it states that I am feeling sexy
and also about being surprised if my friend orders champagne. I believe that
horoscopes can be true at times but this particular one is extremely
inaccurate.

Mass Media and Niche Media
The concept that I am focusing on this chapter is mass media
and niche media. Mass media and niche media are two forms of
communication. Mass media was created to
reach and influence large audiences where as, niche media focuses on a narrowly
defined audience (page 341 Boss). I never paid much attention to what the media
was directed at but now that I learned about both of these I can definitely see
the difference. When watching the news it is trying to stay broad and have
something for every ones interest. Cartoons would be considered a niche media
because it is directed towards children such as Nick Jr. I feel that both are very interesting because
I watch things that are focused for certain people like MTV, which is directed
towards young adults. Mass Media helps you keep up with the current events from
gossip to government policies. When most people watch television or get on the Internet
they do not realize that there is a certain audience they are trying to get.

Sadler and Hunt
Both Sadler and Hunt have valid points in their arguments.
Sadler believes that you are cheating yourself when using the Internet because
most students tend to plagiarize. She also argues that plagiarism is wrong
especially when using the Internet. When Sadler discusses plagiarism she talks
about how it is unfair to use papers from the Internet because teachers raise
the grading scale and those students who do not plagiarize their papers
struggle because their papers seem weak next to the plagiarized ones. Sadler
states that plagiarism makes it unfair for the students and also the teachers.
The teachers take their time trying to teach the material while the students
who plagiarize are taking the easy way out. Hunt believes that students decide
to plagiarize because of the grading scale to satisfy requirements. Sadler thinks that plagiarism is wrong and doesn’t
approve of it. Hunt doesn’t agree with Sadler because he believes that students
plagiarize because of all the pressure put on them. I personally would agree
with Hunt because most students do not plagiarize purposely but because they
are overwhelmed and are determined to get a good grade. Plagiarize is not that
big of a deal especially when writing certain papers.

Media page 359
The media uses Euphemism
to sugar coat things. During
hurricane Katrina the media tried to use Dysphemism
to portray the African Americans as thieves. The media suggested that African Americans
were stealing everything such as electronics, food, water, and clothing.
Basically the media said that they were stealing anything they could get their
hands on that was worth value. The problem with the media was that they
neglected to report the other ethnicity that make up the populist area that was
hit by Hurricane Katrina. They only reported on the negatives of the African Americans,
when they failed to report the hurricane assistant. The government did not
assist those who needed help the most instead they only tried to shine the
light on the few families they did help. The media challenges you by only
reporting what they want to report, which forces you to find alternative ways.
When watching the news or any media reports remember to always check their sources.

advertisement
After reading this chapter a concept that really caught my
attention is the advertisements area. I never really paid much attention to all
the ways of advertising. With famous people they are considered walking advertisements
even with normal people. With celebrities the clothes, shoe and jewelry they
wear inspire people like me to try and copy their fashion sense. When watching
television shows they show who sponsors that show and even the network it is
on. Advertiser use false information in order to pursued others. The proactive
commercial is a great example of false advertisement because they use
celebrities to pursue you into buying their product. Proactive does not work
for everyone but they make you think that since Vanessa Williams uses it that
you need it too. When thinking of buying a product you see you should do research
on it because not everything works there is arguments can be very faulty. They advertisements
they use scare tactics, and the fallacies they use are questionable cause,
popular appeal, snob appeal, appeal to inappropriate authority, hasty
generalization, and amphiboly. These fallacies are what help draw you in.

Wootan VS. Liodice
Both Wootan and Liodice points of view have good arguments. The
arguments discuss the CSPI legislation in regards of regulating food
advertising to children. Wootan Agree with the CSPI because he believes that it
will make the children eat healthier if they restrict the advertising agencies
for posting any and everything. The problem I have with Wootan’s argument is
that he only discusses the advertising agencies and what they need to work on.
I think that he needs more evidence in order to really expand and have a strong
argument. The only facts that were given in his argument was about how child
obesity exists. Liodice argument discusses the first amendment and how it
should be preserved and how he believes that having restrictions and guidelines
are pointless. Basically Liodice’s argument is just stating his opinions. I
believe that there should be regulations on how they can advertise food because
the United States has way too much obesity. If focusing on children’s health is
important although I believe it is the parents jobs to make sure that there
children are healthy. The problem with trying to avoid obesity is that most Americans
cannot afford good food or do not have the time to focus on good health.

Marketing strategies
This week I have been surrounded by several different
marketing strategies. I work in retail therefore I have to use some of the strategies.
As a consumer every time I walked in a store someone approached me asking me if
I needed help and explaining his or her promotions to me. One that work was
when I walked into Armani exchange they explained that their sales items were
and additional 40 percent off. Telling their customers about the markdown
promotion is a smart idea because the consumer would want to buy more things
from the sale section. It also will give them the opportunity to look at their
new season collection. When the sales associates approach you they attempt to
persuade you into buying things that are similar to the things you have on and
pick up in the store. I also have seen a few advertisements online but I do not
feel that they are as effective as walking into a store because when I am
online I am usually focused on a particular thing.
